The concept of our generation

There is an idea of our generation, some kind of abstraction that we even cannot figure out by ourselves. We are said to be associated with technology, the internet, and social media, which sometimes leads to stereotypes, such as tech-addicted, anti-social, or “social justice warriors.” Certainly, we should not forget to mention that for some people we are just “a bunch of careless kids” who struggle with anxiety and depression. Despite all of this, the members of Gen Z have goals and interests in many fields.

We are eager to stand out as well as to focus on innovation and uniqueness. The pervasive diversity is considered by iGeneration as something common. The current generation has experienced life events such as legalizing same-sex marriage, more awareness of the transgender community, and a time when there is not an ethnic majority. These life events cause GenZ to not care what race you are, think of the LGBT community as normative, and to think of gender as fluid.

Furthermore, a kind of specific GenZ’s sense of humour is often misunderstood. The vast majority of adults even find it wicked or too dark. Gen Z is able to laugh at the extremely horrifying or traumatizing real-world goings-on because we realize, in the end, there is truly no other alternative. Gen Z is tired of jokes centered around sexism, homophobia and racial stereotypes, and instead turns to humour that either makes light of gruesome situations or provides a healthy dose of escapism and absurdity. As a member of this generation, I sometimes find myself giggling at Ryanair TikTok, which is absolutely iconic or shows that have shaped my childhood such as The SpongeBob SquarePants or Madagascar.

Members of Generation Z are activists. They are aware of problems among us and when it comes to fighting for the planet, the young have the loudest voice. Nevertheless, some of them find just the idea of participation in these actions interesting. At first, they are willing to be involved, but later on they tend to quit. That is probably the biggest issue with our generation. It is also vital to mention that we have huge aspirations, however we seem to give up on them too easily.

Our generation is inevitably a population of diverse, highly digital individuals. We enjoy controversial and bizarre looks – some of us want to express ourselves by that, and the others are just seeking attention, but indeed it is definitely not „one shoe fits all.”
